Why Everything Feels Like Too Much Right Now
If you’re holding more than you can name — this could be why
Why Everything Feels Like Too Much Right Now
There’s a lot in the air lately.
It’s been sitting in my chest for weeks now.
Not loud.
Not explosive.
Just there.
I notice it in the mornings first.
Standing in the kitchen, kettle on, light coming through the window, and my shoulders already a little higher than they need to be. Jaw set before I’ve said a word. That familiar feeling of being on before anything has actually happened.
There’s a lot happening, but not in one place.
The news. Names. Faces. Deaths that shouldn’t be statistics but somehow are.
A friend visiting, moving slowly through my house, carrying the kind of heartbreak that changes how someone sits on the couch. A recent breakup that’s still raw enough you can feel it in the pauses between sentences.
My partner shifting as her child shifts; new routines, new emotions, new questions with no clean answers yet.
And for me, a deep settling process.
An ending that’s been finalized.
A life direction changing shape.
Something old no longer asking for attention, but still asking to be honored.
None of it is dramatic on its own.
But together?
It stacks.
I can feel my system trying to do what it’s always done when things stack:
tighten.
organize.
manage.
hold it all.
I catch myself listening while also scanning the room.
Being present while also bracing.
Trying to stay steady while already budgeting energy for what might come next.
Nothing is “wrong.”
And still, everything feels heavier.
That’s the part we tend to miss.
When life brings multiple emotional loads at once, personal, relational, collective, the system doesn’t sort them neatly. It just registers; more is being asked.
So it prepares.
Breath gets shorter.
Patience thins.
Sleep gets light.
The urge to withdraw or control creeps in.
Not because you’re failing.
Because your system is trying to keep you upright.
We’re taught that when this happens, the solution is to rise above it.
To be grateful.
To stay productive.
To not let it get to us.
But here’s what I’m learning. Again. The slow way:
Capacity doesn’t grow by pushing past what’s here.
It grows by letting what’s here be felt without being rushed.
Change needs space.
Love needs space.
Responsibility needs space.
So does uncertainty.
And right now, there’s a lot of all of it.
What’s helped isn’t making sense of it all.
It’s noticing when I’m holding my breath while listening.
When my jaw tightens as someone else shares.
When my attention is already living in the next moment instead of this one.
That’s the moment agency shows up.
Not as control.
As choice.
I can’t fix the world.
I can’t rush my partner’s process.
I can’t carry my friend’s heartbreak for them.
And I don’t need to disappear from my own process to be supportive.
What I can do is stop demanding that my system hold everything at once.
That’s not weakness.
That’s discernment.
2 Things To Do Today
Thing 1: Regulation — The “Arrive Where You Are” Pause (2 minutes)
No special breathing pattern.
Just this:
Sit or stand.
Feel your feet or seat.
Let your eyes soften and pick one neutral object in the room.
Then ask quietly:
“Am I here… or am I already somewhere else?”
If you notice you’re already ahead, gently bring your attention back to what you can see, hear, or feel right now.
Stay there for two minutes.
Why this helps:
Your system settles when it receives clear signals of now.
Orientation is one of the fastest ways to reduce internal load, without forcing calm.
Thing 2: Kind Action — Reduce the Load by One Degree
Not everything.
Just one degree.
Today, choose one place where you stop holding things together:
Let someone else finish the sentence.
Leave a message unanswered.
Name that you don’t have clarity yet, and don’t rush to find it.
Small reductions add up.
This is how capacity expands without collapse.
Mantra
I’m allowed to move at the speed this moment requires.
Let’s Talk
How are you feeling?
You don’t need to explain it perfectly.
Just notice it and let me know?
This is how steadiness is rebuilt.
This is how meaning forms.
This is how we keep going, together.
Until next time, one breath, one kind action, repeat.

I’ve noticed a feeling of heaviness when I wake up each day. I’m also dreaming, but I can’t remember the content of the dream, only that I am disturbed by it. I text an inspirational phrase to a few family and friends each morning. I have noticed that connection has helped the heaviness to dissipate some. I appreciate the 2 things I can do when I’m feeling this way. Thank you!
